putting responsibility where it belongs

  • Mar. 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 AM

I feel terribly sorry for the families who lost their loved ones in this horror smash, but I have to disagree with the sentiments blaming police. The driver chose to steal a car, chose to speed the stolen car past police, and chose to run red lights. Through his conscious choices, he became a mass murderer. By the time he ran that last red light, and killed a family, the police had already stopped, deeming it too dangerous, and the driver responsible for the carnage was weel aware of the damage a car as a weapon can do, having been facing charges for a similar incident last year. The cynic in me, however, acknowledges that is is likely to be far more lucrative to blame the police, than putting the responsibility where it really belongs.

baby words

  • Mar. 20th, 2010 at 9:56 PM
Daniel is watching Ice Age 3, and happily telling me everytime there's a dinosaur on the screen *g* I'm hearing "dinoden" a lot. Why does he call them dinodens? I suspect it's  because his teddy bear is a dragon, hence the amalgamation.

light show

My favourite of these light pictures would have to be the dolphins, but the giant shark biting the bridge is pretty cool

I could really use a little break from my life for a little while.

seriously, can it just get better for a little while now?

Moments: the Hands of my Grandfather

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 10:40 AM
His daughter smiled up at him weakly, her face pale and beaming. Her boyfriend handed the bundled sleeping creature to him, its face shut tight against the world. He saw with disappointment that the babe had inherited his nose.   The lights flickered a bit, and his hands spread with their own wisdom to cradle the child. (read more)

this is actually pretty cool

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 8:56 PM
Being a bit of a Jennifer Fallon fan, I have read all the Tide Lord books, multiple times. *g* Jen posted a link toa book trailer for the Tide Lords, which had Elyse and I chuckling when it got to the ...again bit. I think good, Elyse thinks it's much better than the little fashion shows on you tube, but the definitive response to the trailer came from Jason, who pronounced it to be "Cool"

what the???

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 8:59 AM
This morning I decided I was in the mood for some Credence Clearwater Revival whilst cooking breakfast. I turned on my little cd player in the kitchen, put the cd in, it flickered, and on the digital readout it said quite clearly - no . So I tried a Sound garden cd. Lights flickered, then ...no. So I cleaned the lasers, and tried a Lynard Skynard cd. Again my cd player said no.

Hmmm, everyone's a critic about my music choices. Trust me to get an appliance that gives attitude as it dies *g*

Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 6:55 PM
I loved the Harry Potter Books, mostly. The first four were brilliant, great entertainment, and the hype didn't start til Book 4. Books 5 & 6 could certainly have done with a much heavier edit than they recieved, but they still progressed the story, a lot darker, but still entertaining. I admit to being somewhat underwhelmed by Book 7. I read it in one sitting, I basically inhaled that book. And I put it down thinking - ok, wel at least I know how it ends... And I put it down, voiced my general sense of dissatisfaction, and left it at that.

Til this week, when I took the time to re-read it. And I found I was far more engaged by a second reading than the first had ever had on me. I kept reading parts that seemed brand new, I couldn't remember reading them the first time around. It seemed so much more exciting, I was drawn deeper into the story. The Deathly Hallows made much more sense on the second reading, and I even liked the epilogue. - had I really missed all this on my first reading? Or were my expectations simply lowered this time?

Whatever, in a week of lows, I really enjoyed re-reading this book. *g*

Redemption!

  • Mar. 13th, 2010 at 3:25 PM
Creative Guy Publishing is bringing out Amityville House of Pancakes 4. But whereas previous AHOPs have promised, and delivered, breakfast so good you'll hardly miss your soul, for AHOP4, CGP is promising its authorsa chance to regain their souls, just a little bit ...

schools and autism

  • Mar. 11th, 2010 at 9:36 PM

I'm incredibly happy with the school we've chosen for Jason thus far, but even more so after reading this report about the school in Sydney caging kids with autism.  I can understand completely how worried the parents would be, especially if their child, like Jason, is a runner. I can also see why they would accept even so rudimentary an attempt to keep those children safe. One of the features of our school that made it particularly appealing to us, was the six foot boundary fence; with the main Sydney/Melbourne train line running through our town, plus the Olympic Highway, and the Billabong river, I'm glad that every effort is made to keep all the students, special needs or neural-typical, safe. Maybe the Dept of Education could look into this idea for all schools?

over at [info]jongibbs lj you can nominate up to two of your short story and/or flash fiction titles. I'ts a bit of fun, and lets face it, stray over-sized El Dorado Cadillacs in the streets of Culcairn not withstanding, we all need more fun in our day *g*

the things you see in a little counrty town

  • Mar. 11th, 2010 at 1:11 AM

I'm not a huge car fanatic, mostly I can tell what colour they are, it's the men in my family that obssess over the year and make blah blah blah. But even I knew what this car was as I watched it gently navigate around the roundabout today. Mind you, the one I saw was dark brown, and had brown and white cowhide seats, complete with a set of polished cow horns on the front, and I've had Bruce Springsteen's Cadillac Ranch stuck in my head since I saw it!

Birthday party time

  • Mar. 10th, 2010 at 10:56 AM
We had a birthday afternoon tea party for Rohan's 4th birthday on Monday (it's not his birthday til Friday, but with the Vic public holiday, and Chris & Keith both having regular Mondays off, it was the best day to get nearly everyone here ... Rohan didn't seem to object to having an early party *g*) But instead of making a slab cake, I made him a chocolate feast of cupcakes (butterfly & chcolate buttercreme topped) light and dark chocolate crackles, and mini pavlovas, with chocolate milkshakes to wash it all down. We had three very chocolate covered little boys, and Rohan took an especial liking to the jester's hat and his big brother's sunnies lol
